2013 Apr 26

Rachel Beyer, a senior student at Marquette University studying environmental engineering from Franklin, Wis., is a member of this year's Marquette University women's club volleyball team that won the National Collegiate Club Volleyball Championship, a three-day, 180-team tournament. The team beat the University of Texas in the semi-final rounds to face the University of Arizona in the final round of the tournament.

Throughout the spring semester, the women's club volleyball team participated in three tournaments, including a 20-team national ranking tournament held at Marquette University. The team ended the second semester with a 31-1 match record and went 9-0 to win the national tournament.

The women's club volleyball team began in 1995 as one of the first club sports teams on campus. Practices are held twice each week from September through April.

"This has been one of the most memorable seasons in Marquette women's club volleyball history," said Anne Pufahl, assistant director of recreational sports and coach of the women's club volleyball team. "This was a driven team that overcame a number of obstacles and were not going to let another team stop them."

The Marquette University Club Sports Program is designed to provide competitive, recreational and instructional sport activities for students. More than 30 club sports opportunities are offered, with the basic structure of clubs allowing members numerous opportunities for involvement with fundraising, public relations, budgeting, administration and scheduling.
