Eilish Tucker Part of Leadership Team for Marquette University's Active Minds Chapter

2011 Nov 2

Eilish Tucker, a senior from Yucca Valley, Calif., majoring in psychology and anthropology, is Secretary of the Active Minds chapter at Marquette University for 2011-2012. Tucker is one of nine students to serve on the executive board that plans and executes all club meetings and campus activities.

Active Minds is a student organization that promotes awareness of mental health disorders and seeks to remove the stigma that surrounds mental illness on college campuses. Active Minds provides information and resources regarding mental health to the student body through various campus events and monthly club meetings. One of 365 Active Minds chapters nationwide, the Marquette chapter was founded in 2008.

"It is validating to see a group of passionate student leaders take a proactive role in addressing the mental well-being of students at Marquette," said Nicholas Jenkins, adviser of the club and a mental health care provider in the Marquette Counseling Center. Active Minds works closely with Marquette's Counseling Center and encourages students to seek help as soon as it is needed.

Tucker is involved in planning the third annual Suicide and Depression Awareness Walk and Vigil Sunday, Nov. 6, at 5 p.m. on Marquette University's campus. The event is as a chance for Active Minds club members and the greater Milwaukee community to understand the impact that both suicide and depression have on college campuses.
