Appleton Native Ellen Ketter Helps Organize Marquette University's Largest Service Project

2013 Apr 15

Ellen Ketter, a junior student at Marquette University studying biomedical sciences from Appleton, Wis., will participate in Marquette University's 24th annual Hunger Clean-Up Saturday, April 20. Hunger Clean-Up is Marquette University's largest service project, with nearly 2,000 students serving 50 local non-profit worksites.

Ketter, a member of the student leader team, has worked throughout the school year to coordinate all facets of the event, including fundraising, marketing and event planning for the day. Hunger Clean-Up is entirely student-led, with sponsorship from the Center for Community Service at Marquette University.

"I could not be more excited about what we have done to shift the focus of Hunger Clean-Up for 2013 from a service perspective to a focus on community partnership and solidarity," said Brittany White, co-coordinator of Hunger Clean-Up. "Our entire leadership team has embraced this attitude of intentionality in our preparations for Hunger Clean-Up, and I hope that all of our participants will be willing to share in our hunger for adopting this deeper purpose."

Hunger Clean-Up volunteers start the day on the Marquette campus, before traveling to local worksites to spend the day fulfilling agency partners' identified needs at food pantries, community gardens, youth organizations, homeless shelters and other community organizations. In past years, Hunger Clean-Up has raised money to award three partner agencies with $3,000 grants in an effort to expand and/or sustain acts addressing poverty and hunger in the Milwaukee community. Since its beginning in 1989, nearly 27,000 volunteers have participated in Hunger Clean-Up.
